How to Hire a Plasterer in New Zealand

In New Zealand, when people talk about plastering they're almost always talking about gib stopping — the process of finishing plasterboard (called GIB® in NZ, a brand name that's become generic) to a smooth, paint-ready surface. Whether you're renovating a room, repairing cracks, or finishing a new build, understanding how plastering works in NZ helps you get the right result.

Plastering and Gib Stopping Costs (2025)

| Service | Typical Cost | |---|---| | Gib stopping (per m²) | $25 – $45/m² | | Crack repair (hairline to moderate) | $150 – $400 | | Ceiling repair (damaged section) | $300 – $800 | | Full room plaster and stop | $600 – $1,500 | | New bathroom gib and stop | $1,500 – $3,500 | | Feature arch / curved stopping | $500 – $2,000+ |

Prices depend on the level of finish required, accessibility, and the complexity of the work. Always clarify the finish level when comparing quotes.

What Is Gib Stopping?

Gib stopping is the process of applying joint compound (called stopping compound or "stop") to the joins, fastener holes, and edges of plasterboard sheets, then sanding to create a smooth, seamless surface ready for paint.

The process involves multiple coats:

  1. Tape coat — embedding paper or fibreglass tape over joins
  2. Fill coat — building up thickness over joins and fasteners
  3. Finish coat — thin skim coat to create a smooth surface
  4. Sanding — between coats and final sanding before painting

Understanding Level 5 Finish

Gib stopping in NZ is graded on a Level 1–5 scale:

| Level | Description | Where Used | |---|---|---| | Level 1 | Basic tape only | Concealed spaces, plenums | | Level 2 | Tape + one coat | Garages, storage | | Level 3 | Tape + two coats | Textured or thick paint finish | | Level 4 | Standard residential finish | Most NZ homes | | Level 5 | Skim-coated, premium finish | High-gloss paint, photography, showrooms |

Level 4 is the standard for most NZ residential rooms. Level 5 is the highest quality — required where walls will be painted in a semi-gloss or gloss finish, or where direct light will hit walls. It adds 15–30% to the cost but is worth specifying in living rooms and hallways where imperfections will show.

How Long Does Plastering Take?

For a standard room, allow:

  • Day 1: Tape coat applied and dried (4–8 hours drying time in good conditions)
  • Day 2: Fill coat applied and dried
  • Day 3: Finish coat applied and dried
  • Day 4: Sanding and prep for paint

So a minimum of 3–5 days is needed before a room is ready for painting. In cold, humid weather (common in many NZ winters), drying times extend — good plasterers don't rush this.

What to Ask When Hiring a Plasterer

  1. What level of finish will you provide? — Ask specifically (Level 4 or 5)
  2. How many coats? — Three coats minimum for residential; any fewer is a shortcut
  3. Will you sand between coats? — Proper sanding is what creates a smooth finish
  4. Will you supply materials or do I supply them? — Most NZ plasterers supply their own stopping compounds
  5. How do you handle cracks? — Good plasterers identify and address the cause (movement, settlement) not just the symptom

Common Mistakes When Hiring Plasterers

  • Choosing the cheapest quote without asking about the finish level — Level 3 vs Level 5 is a big difference
  • Painting too soon — new stopping must be fully dry before painting; moisture causes adhesion failure
  • Not asking about warranty — reputable plasterers will return to fix any cracking within a reasonable period
  • Skipping a proper inspection before accepting the work — look at the walls under raking (side) light before sign-off; this is how you spot defects
